It seems that we have two action items. 1. Raising the Plant Center profile: develop a 5-slide ppt for a 10-min presentation to Provost (after running it by David). Do we need a white paper too? For the ppt, Wayne will provide a slide on seed sales (GA economy), I have the funding data (attached) that can be merged into one slide (other suggestions welcome), we need a goal/vision statement (see below), and perhaps one slide on the importance of graduate program and graduate recruiting (future training grant?), and a long-range vision (a center/institute of excellence). Anything else (point of pride, e.g., NAS members, etc)? If each of you can claim/contribute one slide, we can then brainstorm more to polish the presentation. 2. Discussing with Nancy and relevant deans/chairs and allies for a plant-centered umbrella graduate student recruiting program. How should we divide the tasks here? Meet with Nancy as a group? Related to this, can one of you help edit the current website description of the various grad programs? This is within our control (barring web developer s schedule) and can be updated quickly. http://dev.plantcenter.uga.edu/study/graduate-programs/ 3. Please also take a minute to read the Research statements that Terry Hastings developed for the new website. We also need your updated faculty information (except Wayne and Scott who already did theirs). http://dev.plantcenter.uga.edu/research/ https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1d4_LdgLs7diwBFSU4WMLKVf0UP-uGZymaPJ5S6 ueRtk/edit What about this for a goal statement: Position the Plant Center as a premier institute for basic and applied plant research and graduate education. * A national hub for talented faculty * A magnet for excellent graduate students and postdoctoral associates * A corridor for undergraduate experiential learning Other iterations: Establish a national identity for the Plant Center as a premier institute for basic and applied plant research and graduate education. Position the Plant Center as a national leader in basic and applied plant research, with excellence in graduate education. Burke Subject: Lunch Dear All, Thanks for the time and good discussion over lunch yesterday. This is just to reaffirm my interest in helping to elevate the perception and knowledge of the plant sciences at UGA. Also, to let you know that I did my homework. I ve communicated with Nancy and she has expressed her willingness to meet with any of you to brainstorm an ILS-like plant portal. Also, I have communicated with Terry and James and they are keen to write a comprehensive story (we ll meet in the new year to discuss). Terry also pointed me to the new Plant Center website, which is gorgeous. Happy holidays!
