This sounds like as excellent opportunity. ;Solomon Islands has asked for assistance in developing ABS and I am workin g on an information package with themE28094their policy development has been minimal to date.

Fiji, as you know is quite advanced and with a l ittle work could finalise a policy; this has been a bit slow as the s taff member responsible (in Environment) for this keeps changing but it is at least on their agenda; once people are back from summer holid ays I will discuss with them.

This email is to introduce you to Dr. Jaime Cavelier, who is a senior Biodiversity Specialist at the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and the liaison for the Nagoya Protocol Implementation Fund (NPIF), set up to facilitate the implementation of Biodiversity conse rvation and ABS initiatives in countries signing on to the Nagoya Protocol (< span style3D"font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-s erif"">http://www.thegef.org/gef/node/4568&n bs p;). The NPIF can provide matching funds to country projects that meet th eir criteria for advancing ABS initiatives consistent with the Protocol. &n bsp;He is familiar with the ICBG program and just recently made the first m id-level ($1 mil) NPIF award to the Panama ICBG to promote a joint initiative based on, but expanding the activities of, the ICBG. Josh and I suggested that your Fiji ICBG might simi larly be a suitable basis on which to build a NPIF project. I am attaching a draft checklist Jaime forwarded to us that gives some idea of the criteria for projects. If you are intere sted, please contact Jaime, ccE28099d here, to discuss in more detail. & nbsp;Lissy Coley with the Panama Group can also give you more insight into what is involved in putting together one of these propos als.
